The Craft of Weaving

Over the winter months our weaving studio has been incredibly productive, focusing predominately on Margo's next large format art series currently in production on the 24-shaft AVL loom.

Before weaving commences, a vibrant warp of 2,664 individual threads in rich purples and blues (intended to evoke the depths of space) has been meticulously measured, counted, and threaded.

Each intricate step of this process is documented in our 'At the Loom' Instagram series offering an intimate glimpse into the precision of our craft.

While Margo's art practice remains the pinnacle of her weaving, our studio equally dedicates significant creative energy to product development. Our design process translates traditional hand weaving into modern commercial production. New rug, scarf, and bed linen designs destined for 2025 launch begin as carefully crafted weaving samples on our studio's upright and table looms before being produced at specialist commercial mills.

While weaving itself can be a solitary practice, we actively connect with the wider weaving community. We are currently preparing our studio looms for 2 upcoming creative weaving workshops in March, where weavers from all over the world of varying experience are led by Margo in exploring and expanding their technical and creative weaving.

Later this month three of our studio weavers will attend the Textile Awards Ceremony presented by The Worshipful Company of Weavers. Over the years the Margo Selby studio has employed several weaving graduates with the invaluable support of their graduate program.

The Worshipful Company of Weavers lead the way in championing and growing the UK’s woven textile industry, by highlighting and nurturing young talent.

Our working weaving studio welcomes visitors to experience the craft driving our work. Each day offers a unique insight - from unrolling new rug designs to reviewing textured silk fabric samples.

Whether you're a weaver, an art enthusiast, an interior designer or simply curious about a maker's studio, we're always eager to share our creative process.
