The Museum of Carpet

Margo Selby gave an illustrated talk ‘Art into Industry’ at the Museum of Carpet on Saturday 20th August 2022 – as part of the exhibition Magnificent Design. Margo’s Festival rug design was selected to be displayed at the exhibition of historic carpets and contemporary design celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Museum of Carpet.

Opened in 2012, the Kidderminster Museum of Carpet is the only institution in the UK dedicated to celebrating the heritage, art, and industry of carpet-making. Their values match ours very closely, and indeed the Kidderminster town motto is 'With God's help, through art and industry, it flourishes'.

Design:

The Festival rug design arranges geometric motifs in an orderly manner. Playing with scale and repeat the pattern creates a vehicle for colour. Each hue is chosen to maximise contrast and texture. The design organises shapes on an invisible grid, juxtaposing shape and scale. A multicoloured palette of light, dark, bright and neutral colours, creating a syncopated pattern.

"We are delighted to have the opportunity to exhibit Margo Selby’s ‘Festival Rug’. It forms the climax of the exhibition, where there is an explosion of colour and abstract forms."
