Case Study | From Logan to Arden

The beauty of designing rugs is that the rug itself can be treated like a canvas to compose the artwork. The Logan rug is an example of scaling up a motif which the Margo Selby Studio has used in small-scale repeating patterns for years. This single motif now in macro; fills the entire composition. For added texture and colour, varying mathematical pinstripes have been used to fill the shapes within the design - pattern within pattern.

The brief

A client requested our Logan rug design resized and recoloured in hues of green. Our in-house designer developed a palette of 10 harmonious colours of hand-dyed wool, perfectly balancing saturation and contrast.

Producing a bespoke rug

Colour
To realise our designs, Margo has developed a signature colour pallete; additionally we are able to colour-match specific requests using the internationally recognised ARS system.

Various samples showcasing design, colour and rug-making technique are available to view in our studio; clients are welcome to make an appointment for a rug consultation in person or online.

Materials
The materials that go into weaving a Margo Selby rug are as important as the design and workmanship. We work with each client to select the most suitable materials for each projects requirements, and client preferences.

Handspun Wool | Silk | Tencel | Jute | rPET

Design
Within our team we have a wealth of design experience and rug-making knowledge. Clients are invited to review our extensive portfolio as a starting point for bespoke projects.

Techniques

Hand Knotted
Hand knotted rugs are acknowledged as the finest quality and tend to be weighty and floppy in structure. Different knot densities are available, as determined by the design and personal preference.

Premium Tufted
This quality produces an exceptionally high pile density resulting in a premium rug with rich colour saturation and a luxurious feel underfoot.

Hand Tufted
Features of this method are the density of pile and crispness of line, with optional varied pile heights hand-carved to create a 3-dimensional effect.

Flatweave
Kelim flat-woven rugs (without a pile) are hand produced on a horizontal floor loom. This is a traditional rug-making technique that results in a lighter-weight, practical and beautiful floor covering. Our flatweave rugs can be produced in either wool (for indoor use) or rPET (spun recycled plastic, for indoor or outdoor use).
